"Old Blue" - A Lobster Illustration

“Old Blue” was created quite soon after my move home to Prince Edward Island. I knew I wanted to create a lobster piece- I was living home in Fortune and surrounded by communities that thrived on the lobster industry. I wanted to do something that was a nod to that industry and everything it brought.

I created this illustration with archival inks on 11” x 14” mixed media card stock. I began the piece with a pencil outline, followed by black inks, and coloured in at the end in blues.

I wasn’t sure when I first created it which colours I would end up with, but really love the blues. They’re so rare and vivid, it just seemed like the right fit for the concept. I used three shades of blue Microns and Faber-Castell’s to give some depth to the lobster.

The original illustration sold last Summer at Artisans on Main in Souris. It’s one of my favourite spots to display new works.

Now I sell “Old Blue” in 11” x 14” prints, 8” x 10” prints, greeting cards, and even a vinyl sticker.

This design has gone to many of those who never found an artwork really geared to them before. I’ve has countless lobster fisherman purchase the prints, send the cards and even put the vinyl sticker on their trucks. For many, it might be symbolic of their parents or childhood. It’s pretty nice to offer a piece that my local community members really go for. I have a tuna piece, and one called “Cradled Island” that illicit a similar response.

“Finally, a piece for me” is such a great response to hear!

All of the ways to find Old Blue are on my Etsy page, if you’re looking for a little blue lobster in your life.
